A catheterization laboratory or cath lab is a procedural room in a hospital or clinic with specialised X-ray imaging equipment that is used to visualize blood vessels in the body. In the procedure thin plastic tubes called catheters are inserted through a small puncture in the skin and into the arteries to be visualized.  An x-ray dye in injected through the catheters to allow the vessels to be seen on X-ray.  In addition, specialised guidewires and devices, like balloons and stents, can be inserted via the catheter to treat irregularities in the artery.
